For the last nine years, I’ve had the honor to serve some or all of Augusta in the Legislature, first in the House and now in the Senate. During this time, I have come to realize that the best leaders in government at all levels are those who seek first to understand before trying to be understood. Those leaders who take the time to listen and learn about all sides of an issue before making a decision about the best path forward.

I believe Augusta is at a tipping point. Having lived here my whole life, I can say with certainty that the gritty, organic growth happening in our community is palpable, but also at stake. We need to elect leaders that understand how to balance this growth with sound fiscal decisions that will ensure Augusta continues to thrive in a manner that is sustainable and beneficial for all in the future.

That is why I am pleased to be supporting both Mark O’Brien for mayor and Josh Lilley for council at-large. Both of these leaders have a solid foundational understanding of what Augusta needs. At the same time, they are willing to listen to all residents in an effort to make the best decisions to continue moving Augusta forward. They have a strong vision for what our community can be with a great knowledge of the real challenges we face and bold ideas about how to overcome them. They will both seek first to understand, before being understood.

A gift of leaders willing to listen first is one our community desperately needs more of. Please join me in voting for Mark O’Brien for mayor and Josh Lilley for City Council.

Sen. Matt Pouliot
