LITCHFIELD — A Newport man was killed Thursday night when he was ejected from his pickup truck in a collision with a camper and then run over by two other vehicles on Interstate 95, police said.

Brandon Currie, 35, was driving a blue GMC pickup truck in the passing lane, attempting to pass an RV camper that was in the travel lane, while both vehicles were traveling northbound on I-95 in Litchfield, according to police.

Currie lost control of his vehicle, striking the guardrail and then hitting the RV, forcing both vehicles into the median, according to Shannon Moss, public information officer for the state Department of Public Safety.

Currie was ejected from the vehicle and landed in the roadway. Moments later he was struck by two other vehicles, both traveling in the same direction. He was pronounced dead at the crash scene. The driver of the RV and the drivers of the other two vehicles were not injured.

Moss declined to release the identities of the drivers of the RV or two cars involved, saying they are distraught, especially the drivers who ran over Currie.

Moss also said she could not say whether Currie was wearing his seatbelt because the crash remains under investigation.

She said what caused Currie to lose control is part of the investigation but the initial investigation showed Currie was coming up behind the RV when he tried to pass it in the passing lane, and speed is believed to be a factor.

The northbound lanes of I-95 were closed for about three hours, following the 6:50 p.m. crash Thursday, while Maine State Police reconstructed the crash.

Workers from fire departments in Gardiner and Litchfield, and the Maine Turnpike Authority, assisted in the incident.

Police said the crash remains under investigation.
