I’m sure the folks who want to take over Central Maine Power and Versant mean well but I’m not sure they have thought it through: $13.5 billion is a huge amount of money to be borrowed by the people of Maine. That’s how much it’ll cost to buy two electric companies, and that is before we hire people to run it.

Think about what else could be done with all that money. I have a few ideas. The cost of our energy supply just doubled because it’s being generated by fossil fuels, so some of those billions could be used to help us pay our bills. Part of that money could be invested in renewable energy so we don’t have to rely on dirty fossil fuels to make our electricity.

Even better, we could save ourselves $13.5 billion in debt by not allowing government-controlled power at all.
