Spectrum Generations was recently selected by the State Farm Neighborhood Assist program as a semi-finalist for a $25,000 grant in support of the Meals on Wheels program.

A total of 200 semi-finalists have been selected for this round of consideration. Winners will be selected following a 10-day voting period that goes through Friday, May 6.

The 100 semi-finalists with the most votes will each receive $25,000 grants, according to a news release from the agency.

Spectrum Generations’ staff and volunteers prepare and serve thousands of meals each week to homebound older and disabled Mainers in (part of) Cumberland, Kennebec, Knox (in partnership with Making Communities Happen), Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Somerset and Waldo counties.

Nate Miller, senior program director with Spectrum Generations, said, “Food insecurity and the demand for Meals on Wheels is steadily increasing. Between October of 2020 and September of 2021, Spectrum Generations prepared and delivered 351,985 meals, up from 254,852 meals the year before and 211,991 meals the year before that. While demand for nutritious meals remains steady, financial support from the federal government resulting from COVID relief funds are waning.”

Those who would like to support Spectrum Generations’ effort to receive this grant can visit neighborhoodassist.com/entry/2042274 through May 6 to vote.

People are permitted to vote up to 10 times each day. Winners will be announced on June 7.
