Winthrop High School has announced its top 10 scholars for the class of 2023.

Amelie Grube, the daughter of Susanne and Heinrich Grube of Winthrop, is valedictorian. She plans to study biology.

While at Winthrop, she was involved in co-curriculars including WBUS, Outing Club, and the Civil Rights Team. She was also a member of the Student Council and Student Leadership Team, student representative to the School Committee, secretary of the Class of 2023, and president of the National Honor Society. Grube is an equestrian and has been competing for six years.

In the community, she has volunteered at various locations including P.A.L.S. Animal Shelter and MaineGeneral Medical Center.

Julia Letourneau, the daughter of Jody and Craig Letourneau of Winthrop, is salutatorian. She is planning to attend college and study in a STEM-related field.

She was involved in many extracurricular activities while at Winthrop, serving as a member of the WHS Civil Rights Team, a Student Council representative, and an officer of both the National Honor Society and the senior class. As an athlete, Letourneau earned a varsity letter as a member of the field hockey, softball and basketball teams.

In the community, she has volunteered at the Kennebec Valley Humane Society and at the Winthrop YMCA, where she helped coach youth sport teams. This year, she has received the Maine Academic All-State Award as well as the National Rural and Small Town Recognition Award.

She was also recognized as a National Merit Commended Student.

Sophia Jones Blanco, daughter of Kimberly and Jeffrey Blanco of Winthrop, is planning on attending the University of Rhode Island to study accounting.

During her time at Winthrop, she was involved in extracurricular activities including the WBUS club, Student Council, Student Leadership, and Art Club. Her senior year, she served as a senior editor for the Yearbook Club and the treasurer for her National Honor Society chapter.

Blanco earned varsity letters and Academic All-Star awards in her two sports, tennis and nordic skiing. She played singles for three out of her four tennis seasons, serving as junior captain and earning MVP and MVC First Team All-Star her junior year. She skied for three years, and was an MVC Second Team All-Star her senior year.

Throughout high school, she has received four Gold Keys, five Silver Keys, and three Honorable Mentions from her participation in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Phoebe Dow, daughter of Erin and Charles Dow of Winthrop, plans to attend the University of Maine at Augusta to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation in hopes of flying for the Maine Warden Service.

While at Winthrop, she was involved in the National Honors Society, WBUS 75 Productions, and the Yearbook Club. She spent all four years of high school on the Varsity Nordic Ski Team and served as captain her senior year.

Kamryn Dube, the daughter of Katie Davis and Shawn Dube of Winthrop, plans to attend Southern Maine Community College to study business administration and hospitality management.

While at Winthrop, she was involved in co-curriculars in her Culinary Arts program at Capital Area Technical Center, including Prostart, in which she and her team won the state level, and proceeded to place fifth nationally, and in Commercial Baking for SkillsUSA, which she won at the state level and proceeded to place in the top forty percent of her competition nationally.

Dube was also a member of the Technical National Honors Society and president of the Class of 2023. As an athlete, she played two years of basketball and soccer, earning a varsity letter for soccer.

In the community, she has volunteered in Day of Caring, in the YMCA Girls Basketball Youth Program, for catering events at Capital Area Technical Center, and has also been kick starting her career as a baker.

Isabella Dunn, the daughter of Douglas Dunn and Angelique Hasenfus-Dunn of Winthrop, plans to attend the University of Maine at Augusta to study nursing, with the intention of becoming a nurse anesthetist.

Over her years at WHS, she was involved in extracurriculars, including Yearbook, the Civil Rights Team, and Drama Club, where she received an award for the set during the One Acts Festival. On top of that, she was a member of the National Honors Society, where she helped gather donations for P.A.L.S Animal Shelter. In the community, Dunn loves to help animals and volunteers at a Wilderness Rehabilitation Center. In addition, she has studied dance for the past 15 years.

Elsa Goebel-Bain is the daughter of Angela and Michael Goebel-Bain of Winthrop.

While at Winthrop High School, she was the captain of the girls’ soccer team, and volunteered throughout the community at the Winthrop Food Bank, Winthrop Historical Society and Youth Soccer. She is also the founder and president of the Outdoors Club, and is on the Youth Advisory Council for the nonprofit Teens to Trails.

She is an active member of the Civil Rights Team, Student Council, WBUS, and has been stage manager for a number of WHS plays. Additionally, she is vice president of her class and of the National Honor Society.

She works at Hallowell’s River Room restaurant and has had summer internships with Teens to Trail and with Maine’s First Ship.

Emma Shuman, daughter of Stacy and Steve Shuman of Winthrop, is planning to attend the University of New England to study applied exercise science.

While at Winthrop, she was involved in the Student Leadership Team, WBUS club, and Yearbook Club, as well as a member of the National Honors Society. As an athlete, Shuman played field hockey and tennis, earning a varsity letter in both sports, and was captain of the varsity field hockey team for two years. Overall in her high school field hockey career, she has made conference teams, earned team MVP, named to the MFHA all-state team, won two conference championships, three regional championships, and two state championships.

She has recorded over 75 hours giving back to her community through her dedication to the youth field hockey program and hopes to continue this in the future.

Tyler Shumway, the son of Peter and Kristin Shumway of Winthrop, is planning on studying aerospace engineering.

While at Winthrop, he was involved in many co-curricular activities, including WBUS, the National Honor Society, the Quiz Bowl, and Student Leadership Teams.

Furthermore, Shumway competed for Winthrop as a varsity captain for his baseball, basketball and soccer teams. He volunteers his time by shoveling driveways, tutoring fellow students, and creating a school-wide volunteering forum to get others involved.

Alyssa St. Pierre, daughter of John and Deanna St. Pierre of Winthrop, is planning on attending the University of Maine Honors College at Orono next fall to study biology. She hopes to pursue a career in neurosurgery.

At Winthrop, she participated in the Yearbook Club, Drama Club, Civil Rights Team, and the National Honors Society.
