FARMINGTON — Students and faculty members of the University of Maine in Farmington gathered in the Olsen Student Center on Wednesday for a banquet and ceremony recognizing outstanding members of UMF’s student organizations.

Among the presentations were the 50th Michael Winston Award, Jill Schwab Award, Theo Kalikow and Dr. John H. Rohman Leadership Scholarship.

Winston, who died in 1970 of cancer at age 26, was treasurer of the Student Senate and the Greek Council and a substitute teacher in the Farmington area.

Members of Winston’s family were in attendance, including his son, Matthew Winston, and brother, Tom Winston, spoke about Michael as a kind person.

“I’m going to thank you all in advance for your patience because tonight is not as simple as reading the award criteria and talking about the recipient,” Matthew said. He thanked the UMF Student Senate, President Joseph McDonnell, Director of Student Leadership and Service Kirsten Swan, and Officer of Club Affairs Connor Malone, who was master of ceremonies.

Tom Winston read a letter written by Michael when he was running for the Student Senate.

“The only thing I could promise you is that I would make a sincere and wholehearted effort to unite the different factions on the campus,” he wrote. “All of us should get together and give our representatives our support. Before we can make demands of the administration, we, ourselves have to be unified.”

A copy of the letter was given to the Student Senate by the Winston family.

Matthew quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson, saying, “’To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.’”

The recipient of this year’s Michael Winston award was Reese Remington, a member of the Black Student Union and UMF Democrats.

The Jill Schwab Award was presented to sophomore Cece Carr and the Theo Kalikow Award was given to Orientation Director Connor Fahey.

The Dr. John H. Rohman Leadership Scholarship was awarded to Chloe Allen.

Recipients of the Above and Beyond Award were: Ali Banks-Mitchell, Aidan Mulrooney, Aili Webb, Autumn Koors Foltz, Ava Tebbutt, Dax Betts, Dilyse Lorello, Dongmei Yuan, Ellie Hatt, Erin Cropper, Genevieve Cirello, Hadley Whitlock, Holly Veilleux, Iris Mikeska, Isaiah Day, Jacob Turlo, Jo Lemahieu, Jonas Edwards, Julia Halley, Kate Nowell, Lake Lindelof, Leo Goddard, Lori Beaucage, Rain Smith, Rhiannon Alley, Rowan Fitzgerald, Sam Box, Valentina Levesque and Victoria Oliveira.
