ST. LOUIS — Mike Yastrzemski hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth inning and Thairo Estrada had the go-ahead single in 10th, and the San Francisco Giants rallied to complete a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals with an 8-5 victory on Wednesday.
Yastrzemski’s shot, which came on a 2-2 count with two outs in the ninth inning off Cardinals closer Giovanny Gallegos, made it 5-5. The Cardinals extended their skid to five games and fell to a season-worst 15 games under .500. It was the third blown save of the season for Gallegos.
The late offensive spark lifted the Giants’ winning streak to four games.
Estrada’s single scored Yastrzemski, who was the automatic runner at second base. Wilmer Flores and LaMonte Wade Jr. followed with RBI singles off Steven Matz (0-7).
AMERICAN LEAGUE
BLUE JAYS 3, ORIOLES 1: José Berríos took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, George Springer homered and Toronto won at Baltimore, ending the Orioles’ five-game winning streak.
Berríos allowed only two runners to reach through six innings — on a walk and a hit batter — before Adley Rutschman led off the seventh with a soft liner that dropped well in front of center fielder Kevin Kiermaier.
INTERLEAGUE
TWINS 6, BREWERS 2: A four-run third inning sparked by Carlos Correa, Joey Gallo and Trevor Larnach vaulted Minnesota to a sweep of visiting Milwaukee, handing the Brewers their sixth straight loss.
Minnesota has won 4 of 6. Milwaukee tied a season high for consecutive defeats and is .500 for the first time since April 1.
BRAVES SWEEP TIGERS: Eddie Rosario hit a tie-breaking home run in the sixth inning and visiting Atlanta held on to beat Detroit 6-5 to sweep a doubleheader.
Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna Jr. had solo homers earlier for the NL-East leading Braves, who scored in five of the first six innings.
Andy Ibanez, Matt Vierling and Jake Rogers also cleared the fences in the second game, pulling Detroit into a 5-all tie after five innings.
In Atlanta’s 10-7 win in the opener, Michael Harris went 4 for 4 with a homer and four RBI and Acuna Jr. had three hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs.
NOTES
ATHLETICS: The Oakland Athletics cleared a major hurdle for their planned relocation to Las Vegas after the Nevada Legislature gave final approval to public funding for a portion of a proposed $1.5 billion stadium with a retractable roof.
The deal still needs the governor’s signature, and MLB still must approve the A’s move to Las Vegas, but both are anticipated.
The Assembly approved the final version of the bill with $380 million in taxpayer money on a 25-15 vote after making minor changes to the measure the Senate approved on a 13-8 vote Tuesday just hours before the Vegas Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup.
The Senate accepted the changes with no debate on a voice vote Wednesday night and sent it to the governor’s desk as an “emergency measure” adopted during the special legislative session that convened with Democratic majorities in both houses June 7. Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo had proposed the stadium spending plan.
GIANTS: The San Francisco Giants recalled outfielder Luis Matos from Triple-A Sacramento.
Matos, from Venezuela, was hitting .398 with a 1.120 OPS and seven home runs over 24 games at Sacramento. At 21, he was the youngest player in Triple-A.
Matos entered this season as San Francisco’s No. 7 prospect, according to MLB.com.
ASTROS: Pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery Tuesday night to repair the flexor tendon in his right forearm and remove a bone spur, Astros General Manager Dana Brown announced.
McCullers, 29, is expected to return to pitching during the 2024 season, the team said in a release.
The right-hander has not pitched this season after aggravating the tendon while throwing a bullpen session in West Palm Beach, Florida, in February at the start of spring training. He initially injured the flexor tendon while pitching in Game 4 of the 2021 AL Division Series against the White Sox.
• Slugger Yordan Alvarez could miss at least four weeks with a right oblique strain.
General Manager Dana Brown said Alvarez had an MRI, which confirmed the diagnosis.
Alvarez, who is second in the majors with 55 RBI, was placed on the 10-day injured list last Friday. He exited the game last Thursday against the Blue Jays after one at-bat.
Alvarez is hitting .277 with 17 home runs in 57 games this season after making his first All-Star team last season.
