TURNER — Rescue crews from Turner and Auburn were on the scene of a two-vehicle wreck early Friday night on Auburn Road where at least one person was believed to be seriously hurt.

Early reports about 6:30 p.m. were that a van and pickup truck collided, with the van vehicle flipping onto its side and starting to smoke with a passenger trapped inside.

One witness said she and her boyfriend stopped to help one of the victims, whom she described as “an older gentleman” who’s wife was still trapped inside the wreckage. She said others stopped at the scene to help, as well, in the moments after the collision occurred.

LifeFlight helicopter was called to the scene and Turner Rescue crews called for assistance from the Auburn Fire Department.

Auburn Road is also Route 4. The crash was reported near the intersection of Sinclair Drive. A section of the highway was closed as police, fire and rescue crews worked at the scene later Friday night.

The crash was being investigated by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office. There were no further details about how many people were involved in the wreck and the nature of injuries was not immediately known.

Route 4 has been the topic of discussion in recent weeks after a trio of crashes there, including two motorcycle wrecks, one a fatality, last month. The Sheriff’s Office plans to dedicate a deputy to patrol the Route 4 corridor in an attempt to slow traffic and make the road safer.
