AUGUSTA — Troopers responded Saturday afternoon to multiple crashes and slide-offs on Interstate 95 due to black ice, according to officials.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., troopers responded to reports of eight crashes and slide-offs on the interstate north of Waterville to the greater Bangor area. Due to the poor conditions, the highway southbound from mile 174 to 159 was shut down.

Only minor injuries were reported in one rollover crash and a tractor-trailer ending up sideways across the interstate. Vehicles southbound on mile 158 were brought to a halt while the scenes were cleared up. The interstate at mile marker 174 southbound is now open, according to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the  Maine Department of Public Safety.

Later in the afternoon, 12 other crashes and slide-offs due to black ice at mile 188 southbound in Bangor prompted a response from the Maine State Police and other municipal and county agencies. One person was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  Due to the increased frequency of accidents, the speed limit in the area was reduced to 45 mph.
