As a resident of Maine and a concerned citizen, I write today to express my strong support for  L.D. 2089, a bill currently under consideration in the Maine Legislature. This legislation, entitled “An Act to Require Schools to Provide Instruction Regarding Prevention of the Illegal Use of Fentanyl and Other Drugs and Drug Poisoning Awareness in Grades 6 to 12 and to Establish Drug Poisoning Awareness Week,” aims to combat the drug crisis affecting our state.

The bill proposes that schools provide instruction on the prevention of illegal drug use, with a particular focus on fentanyl, a potent and often deadly opioid. It also seeks to establish a Drug Poisoning Awareness Week, which would take place in the third week of October each year. This week would serve to promote public awareness of the health threats posed by illegal drug use.

The importance of this legislation cannot be overstated. The opioid crisis has had a devastating impact on communities across Maine, and education is a key component in preventing future addiction. By providing students with accurate information about the dangers of drug use, we can equip them with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and resist peer pressure.

Furthermore, Drug Poisoning Awareness Week would serve as a yearly reminder of the ongoing struggle against drug addiction and the importance of prevention efforts. It would provide an opportunity for communities to come together, share resources, and support those affected by drug addiction.

I urge all readers to contact their local representatives and voice their support for L.D. 2089. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against drug addiction and create a safer, healthier future for the youth of Maine.
