Carroll Frigon of Moose River, a sophomore at Forest Hills High School in Jackman, was a guest of honor at the annual State VFW Banquet, held Jan. 20 at the MacCrillis-Rousseau Post No. 8835 in Winslow.
He was recognized at their ceremony for being Maine’s District 5 winner of the yearly Voice of Democracy national speech contest.

Students in grades 9-12 were invited to participate in a national speech contest this past fall on the theme “What Are the Greatest Attributes of Our Democracy?,” according to a news release from history teacher Ami Amero.
Frigon received local accolades in November at high school from the William B. Doughty VFW Auxiliary No. 5723 of Jackman by placing first at the entry level.
His winning submission, sent along to the district level, was selected as the winner for District 5, which includes Dexter, Jackman, Fairfield, Madison, Farmington and Newport.
His winning submission received recognition at the event and was formally presented by Dan West, VFW national adjutant general, and Steven San Pedro, national council member, Maine.
