SKOWHEGAN — A repeat sexual offender from Bingham with a history of convictions dating back nearly 30 years was indicted by a Somerset County grand jury earlier this month on multiple charges related to the sexual assault of children last July.
Christopher C. Cates, 48, of Bingham, has been charged with two counts of unlawful sexual contact, one count of visual sexual aggression against a child, one count of unlawful touching and one count of indecent conduct, according to an indictment handed down by a Somerset County grand jury on Feb. 8.
Cates was also indicted on charges of tampering with a victim, tampering with a witness or informant and three counts of attempted violation of condition of release in connection with his attempted interference in the investigation into his conduct following his arrest in September, court records show.
An indictment is not a determination of guilt but indicates enough evidence exists for a case to move forward to trial.
On July 1, 2023, Cates allegedly assaulted two minors, one younger than 12 and one younger than 14.
On July 7, Cates exposed himself “under circumstances which in fact were likely to cause affront or alarm,” the indictment states.
Following an investigation conducted by the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, police arrested Cates on Sept. 25. Cates posted $25,000 bail.
Five days later, Cates was arrested again after he tampered with the victims and witnesses involved in the July incidents and violated conditions of his release.
Cates attempted to convince one of the victims and a witness to lie or withhold information from investigators, according to court records. He also attempted to contact the victims, potential witnesses or family members, which was prohibited under his bail conditions.
The latest charges add to a lengthy list of sexual offenses committed by Cates, who is a lifetime registered sexual offender. Cates has been convicted previously of sexual offenses in Kennebec and Somerset counties dating back to at least 1996.
Cates is currently being held at the Somerset County Jail in East Madison without bail, an officer in the jail’s intake department said Wednesday.
