Extreme risk laws, also called red flag laws or true Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO), help to increase gun safety and save lives. These laws empower family members and law enforcement to petition courts to temporarily remove firearms from individuals who pose a risk of harming themselves or others. These orders can be very effective in preventing tragedies like suicides or mass shootings by temporarily disarming individuals who are in crisis. Twenty-one states, including the New England states of Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, have extreme risk laws.

It is time for Maine to enact a true Extreme Risk Protection Order. Please contact your legislators and let them know that a true Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) can help save lives and potentially prevent another mass shooting like the one that occurred in Lewiston last year. Let’s do what we can to prevent gun violence before it happens.
