Veterans deserve our support, and right now it’s too difficult to navigate the system that gets them benefits. Currently, in the Maine Legislature, there’s a bill that would make it even harder for veterans to claim the rights and benefits they deserve. The bill would limit who can help veterans with their attempts to access their benefits.
I served in the U.S. Marine Corps. I know plenty of veterans who need help getting their benefits and believe strongly that this bill would be a mistake. Why would Maine choose to constrict an already constricted process? Mainers are known for our community spirit and patriotic values, and we’ve always stood by our veterans.
Let’s give folks who served the freedom to choose how they get assistance rather than the government telling them what they have to do. Let’s focus here: We need to crack down on scammers and get our veterans the help they deserve, rather than limiting their options and who can help them. I oppose L.D. 2259.
