Throughout my time as a representative, I have frequently heard my neighbors and Mainers across the state express concerns about the increased cost of living coupled with the continued rise in property taxes, resulting in an unsustainable financial strain.

Last year, my colleagues and I spearheaded several tax relief initiatives. We created a $300 state child tax credit to give money directly back to families to pay their bills while lowering food insecurity and child poverty. We also increased the annual income pension deduction so folks will be able to retire with greater peace of mind.

In an effort to help alleviate the burden of property taxes, my colleagues and I voted to increase the Property Fairness Credit for those 65 or older from $1,500 to $2,000. Additionally, we expanded eligibility for the state’s Homestead Exemption Program and the Property Tax Deferral Program. The former allows residents who have owned their homes for at least 12 months to reduce their home’s value, while the latter is a lifeline of last resort for those who cannot afford to pay their property taxes. Further efforts to lower property tax burdens on folks include maintaining Municipal Revenue Sharing at 5% and continuing to meet the state’s commitment to fund 55% of public education costs.

I am proud of the progress that we have made, but I know that more must be done. Despite these initiatives, many continue to struggle. I remain committed to advocating for a more equitable tax framework that works for all Mainers. As this legislative session nears its end, I will continue to fight for strategic investments and targeted tax credits to aid working families and those living on fixed incomes.
