The political cartoon published in the May 5 edition of this newspaper shows two middle-aged men being forced by a thug to jump off a cliff at spear point. They ask themselves, “How was I supposed to know he (Donald Trump) was going to become a dictator!” This follows Trump’s April interview with Time magazine at his Mar-a-Lago palace about his plans for his presidency. Trump’s inner circle of advisors previously released plans for a second Trump administration, named Project 2025. So, the answer to the cartoon’s question is … because Trump and his advisors told us so!

Trump’s responses to questions from Time revealed his appetite for power and the United States he envisions, something akin to an authoritarian police state. Here are some of his plans:

1. Centralize the power of the federal government in the president and undermine the constitutional authority of Congress and the Judicial branch.

2. Use the Justice Department to prosecute Trump’s personal vendettas.

3. Use the National Guard and military for civilian law enforcement, including the arrest, placement in detention camps, and expulsion of 11 million illegal and other immigrants. He didn’t say who’s next.

4. Greater injection of the government into our private lives, including allowing states to track pregnant women.

5. Impoundment of funds appropriated by Congress.

6. Return to the corrupt spoils system of the 1800s in the hiring of federal employees with jobs going to political cronies and hacks, replacing the Civil Service System.

Trump for the purposes of his political campaign changed his public position on abortion from supporting a national ban to one of leaving the decision to the states. But, Project 2025 plans for the enforcement of an 1800s federal statute outlawing abortion, much as happened in Arizona.

Be sure to scream on the way down!
