A partial listing of Memorial Day events planned in central Maine.

GARDINER

The Gardiner Memorial Day Parade, organized by the Smith-Wiley American Legion Post 4, will return this year.

The parade will begin at the Gardiner Armory at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27, and will end at the Gardiner Common with a ceremony event in the park to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Expect delays, and proceed with caution if you plan to travel through the area during that time. Brunswick Avenue will be shut down for the parade, and the area will be busy with individuals wishing to watch the parade, according to a news release from Gardiner Main Street.

The following streets will be closed off by 9 a.m.: Dresden Avenue, from Church Street to School Street; Lincoln Avenue, from Brunswick Avenue to School Street; and School Street, from Brunswick Avenue to Dresden Avenue.

These streets around the park are reserved for the participants of the parade, so plan accordingly.

Also, while the parade is occurring, the Gardiner Police Department will be shutting off the Brunswick Avenue access to Central, Washington and High Holburn streets.

HALLOWELL

Goodrich-Caldwell American Legion Post 6 is set to conduct a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27, at the Civil War Memorial in the Hallowell Cemetery, continuing on to the Legion Park section and finishing at the downtown waterfront park.

Guest speakers will be Mayor George LaPointe and state Rep. Dan Shagoury.

All community members, family, and friends are invited to join. Following the ceremony, all are invited to the Post Home at 114 Second St. for social exchange and refreshments.

SIDNEY

The town of Sidney’s Memorial Day parade and ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Monday, May 27.

Henry Gemery, Korean War veteran, will be this year’s grand marshall, leading the parade in an antique car driven by David Fleury.

Veterans, local organizations and others may join the parade as it assembles at the Sidney Transfer Station Drive, off Middle Road, at 9:30 a.m. Some antique vehicles may be available for those veterans who prefer not to walk.

Major General Bill Libby will be master of ceremonies.

Terrance Coley will perform the National Anthem. The Messalonskee High School Band will provide musical selections, and The Kennebec Valley Chordsmen will perform patriotic songs.

Guest speaker Donald Cole will speak about the families who support servicemen and women.

Scout Troop 401 will provide a color guard as well as a hot dog/hamburger lunch and treats.

The Sidney Historical Society plans to host an open house in the Grange following the ceremony.

In the event of rain, attendees will move inside the Grange. Seating will be provided; people can bring their own chairs if they wish.

Those who plan to drive a vintage car in the parade should call Rick Parker at 207-692-3039 by Saturday, May 25, to register for a place in the parade.

All participants will assemble at the Wayne Community Church parking lot, 22 Old Winthrop Road between 10:30-10:45 a.m. The parade will start at 11 a.m. from the parking lot and proceed to Main Street, continue on Main Street, turn around at Pond Road, then proceed to Memorial Park to continue a program.

The speaker will be U.S. Marine Corps veteran Sgt. Craig Grossi, author of “Craig and Fred” and “Second Chances,” where he recounts his experience of finding Fred the street dog in war-torn Afghanistan and how this changed his life. Grossi is a recipient of the Purple Heart and devotes his time to veteran organizations like the USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program and other nonprofits that benefit dogs and veterans.

WHITEFIELD

The Whitefield Historical Society is set to present “Civil War Letters from a Whitefield Soldier” on Monday, May 27. This is the story of letters written by Abraham Hatch Preble to his wife Eglantine.

As Mr. Preble settled into his duties as a Civil War soldier in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Mrs. Preble was managing the family farm in Whitefield, caring for their children and expecting another.

Attendees can follow Abraham Preble’s wartime correspondence with his wife at this Memorial Day program. The public will gather for opening ceremonies at 10:00  a.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial, 36 Townhouse Road, and move to the Whitefield Fire Station for the program.
