SOLON — A 38-year-old Madison man died after a single-vehicle crash in Solon early Wednesday morning, police said.

Nicholas Foss, the passenger of the vehicle, was found dead when first responders arrived around 7 a.m., according to Chief Deputy Mike Mitchell of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

The vehicle, a 2011 Toyota Camry, crashed off South Solon Road near Merrill Lane, which Mitchell described as similar to a private driveway. South Solon Road winds around several corners, Mitchell said.

The car’s driver, Rahaheem Friend, 33, listed as a transient from Skowhegan, was transported by ambulance to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan and subsequently to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment of a broken femur and ankle, Mitchell said in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon.

Per an initial investigation, Friend was driving east, veered to the right, hit several mailboxes and struck a large tree, according to Mitchell’s statement.

Friend and Foss were not wearing seatbelts, Mitchell said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. The Maine State Police was reconstructing the crash Wednesday, Mitchell said.

Sgt. Ritchie Putnam and Deputy William Crawford IV of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash shortly after 7 a.m., Mitchell said. Mitchell said via telephone Wednesday morning that the crash may have occurred hours before responders arrived and that Friend, trapped inside the vehicle, may have attempted to call for help earlier.

The Solon Fire Department and Redington-Fairview EMS responded to the crash along with police.

South Solon Road was closed to traffic for nearly six hours on Wednesday.
