READFIELD — Readfield Union Meeting House Co. received a $316,000 grant from Save America’s Treasures Fund.

This grant will partially fund a project to install a 30-foot tall spire atop the Union Meeting House’s clock tower and belfry. Installation is scheduled to take place this summer and fall.

The original spire toppled to the ground during a winter storm in 1916. The replacement spire enabled by this grant will be an accurate reproduction of the original, based on physical and photographic evidence still available a century after the loss, according to a news release from John Perry, Readfield Union Meeting House Co. treasurer.

Grant funding will come from the Save America’s Treasures Fund, administered by the National Park Service through their Historic Preservation Fund. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King have supported this award to the Union Meeting House via the Congressionally Directed Spending program.

Preservation and restoration of the Union Meeting House has been ongoing for more than seven decades. Union Meeting House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Board President Jim Tukey said, “Thanks so very much to the National Park Service for your generous support, and to the hundreds of individuals and organizations for their matching donations! The Union Meeting House will be in great condition for its 200th birthday in 2028!”
