Snow falling across southern Maine on Thursday morning will give way to rain along the coast.

A burst of heavy snow during the morning could bring snowfall rates of a half-inch to an inch per hour, which is likely to impact the morning commute and make travel tricky through the afternoon. There could be low visibility and slushy roads across the region, according to the National Weather Service in Gray.

Snow will end by early evening and change over to rain along the coast.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Oxford, Franklin, Somerset, Androscoggin, Kennebec and interior Cumberland counties, where mixed precipitation is expected. Snow accumulations in those areas could total 3 to 5 inches and include glazed ice, according to the weather service.

The weather service warned that road conditions could change rapidly and said drivers should be ready to slow down when approaching areas of heavier snowfall.

A small craft advisory is in effect through Friday morning. Southwest winds of 10 to 20 knots with gusts to 30 knots and 6- to 9-foot seas are expected.

Bridgton District Court is closed Thursday because of the weather conditions.
