An electrical issue was the suspected cause of a fire that damaged a home and displaced its residents, according to a fire official.

Firefighters from several communities responded to the blaze at 188 Middle Road around 5 a.m. Tuesday, said Chief Ryan Johnston of the Skowhegan Fire Department. They had the fire extinguished about an hour later.

The fire was contained to a second-floor bathroom and the attic, Johnston said. It did not extend to the home’s addition or its garage.

But the home was left uninhabitable because of the damage: There are holes in the roof, as well as water damage inside, the chief said. “We did a lot of salvage work.”

No injuries were reported. The homeowners have a place to stay with family members, Johnston said.

The homeowners were at home when the fire started, and one unsuccessfully tried to put it out while the other called 911, Johnston said. They then evacuated safely.

Town tax records list the home’s owners as Dale P. Knowlton and Nikki Atkinson.

Middle Road, a portion of Route 104, was closed Tuesday morning while firefighters worked at the scene.

Fire departments from Madison, Norridgewock, Fairfield, Cornville, Canaan and Waterville assisted at the scene. Pittsfield firefighters covered Skowhegan’s station.
