A 76-year-old man died after crashing his car Sunday evening in Anson, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

The single-vehicle crash was reported around 6:30 p.m. on Main Street, heading southwest out of Anson village toward Starks, Chief Deputy Mike Mitchell said Tuesday.

First responders performed live-saving efforts on the driver, Kenneth Trott, of Anson, and he was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital, in Skowhegan, where he died, Mitchell said.

It appeared Trott’s 2014 Toyota RAV4 went off the road, struck a mailbox, then went back on the road and came to rest, Mitchell said. No other vehicles were involved, and the car had no passengers.

The sheriff’s office was continuing to investigate Tuesday what caused the wreck, including conducting a reconstruction, he said. Investigators were considering whether a medical event contributed to the crash, Mitchell said, adding it could take the Office of Chief Medical Examiner months to provide full testing results.

Mitchell said neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be factors. He was unsure whether Trott was wearing a seatbelt.
