The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fire at a residence in Harpswell that killed a 78-year-old man.
Fire crews responded to the scene at 1501 Harpswell Neck Road around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. Firefighters suppressed the fire and found one person inside the home, according to a news release from Maine State Police.
Hugh MacFarlane, 78, of Harpswell, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, state police said. The Office of Chief Medical Examiner will determine MacFarlane’s cause and manner of death.
The fire caused significant damage to the home, particularly to the second floor. Several fire departments from Harpswell, West Bath, the Harpswell islands and Brunswick, and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, also responded to the blaze.
Correction: The Fire Marshal’s Office initially provided an incorrect spelling for Hugh MacFarlane’s last name.
