Sweetgrass Winery & Distillery has permanently closed, after a devastating fire last September.

The 20-year-old business, located in Union, announced its decision in a video press release on Thursday . The tasting room in Portland’s Old Port neighborhood is also closed. The winery made fruit wines, rum, spirits and other products from Maine grains and fruits.

“This is not how I imagined Sweetgrass would end,” distiller and co-owner Keith Bodine said in the video. He owned the business with his wife Constance. “When we opened our doors 20 years ago we could not have foreseen what this business would become. Sweetgrass grew into far more than a winery and distillery. It became a place of connection, invention and innovation.”

Sweetgrass will continue to make a single product, its Back River Gin, which Keith Bodine said in the video is his favorite product. He’ll be producing it in conjunction with Mossy Ledge Distillery in Etna. The gin will be back on store shelves in June, he said, adding, “This next chapter is one of resilience, collaboration and optimism.”

No one was hurt in the fire, and firefighters were able to save the Bodine family’s house and barn. But the 2-minute, 35-second video, with many overhead shots of the destruction and the debris, underlines why the family may have made its decision.

The video notes that since it opened in 2005, the distillery employed 51 people and purchased the fruits and other items needed to make its wines and spirits from 32 Maine suppliers and farmers.
