Maine Maple Sunday Weekend is likely to feature rain across the state, and even snow in some areas, as thousands of Mainers head out to sugarhouses and farms for tours, pancake breakfasts and other fun.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the majority of the state is likely to see some form of precipitation over the weekend. It’s expected to be mostly rain, with some snow up north and in mountainous regions.

The weather service attributed the rain and snow to a series of weak systems that are moving through the region. Precipitation is expected to be light.

The weather service’s Caribou office forecasts some northern communities — including Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton and Millinocket — stand a 25%-40% chance of snow Friday. But less than an inch of accumulation is expected.

The localized snow is expected to turn to widespread rain Saturday, with most areas in northern Maine at a 50%-65% chance of experiencing precipitation, according to the Caribou office.

Meanwhile, southern and central Maine have a 50%-60% chance of precipitation Saturday morning, with those chances dropping in the evening, according to a Wednesday forecast by the weather service’s office in Gray.

More precipitation could arrive Sunday, though the chances are lower. Southern and central Maine only have a 30%-40% chance of seeing precipitation on Sunday, according to the weather service.

Sunday will bring more of a mix to northern Maine, the weather service said. While communities in the Bangor and Down East regions can expect rain, the Caribou office projects that much of Aroostook County could once again see snow or a wintry mix.
