A 73-year-old man died Wednesday morning when the truck he was driving crashed on Route 148 in Madison, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.
First responders pronounced Kenneth Dunphy, of Lexington Township, dead at the scene, Lt. Michael Knight of the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The crash was reported just before 9 a.m., Knight said.
Dunphy’s green 1994 Toyota pickup truck was heading east on the highway, also known as White School House Road, Knight said. The truck went off the road, struck a light pole, glanced off it and came to a stop in the road.
It appeared Dunphy was not wearing a seat belt.
Roadway conditions are believed to have led to the crash, according to Knight.
A light snow fell overnight in the area. The temperature was just above the freezing mark in Madison at 9 a.m., data from the National Weather Service shows.
There were no passengers, and no other vehicles were involved, Knight said.
The road was closed temporarily but was back open by midday.
Detective Wilfred Dodge is the primary investigator. Sgt. Ritchie Putnam and Detective Sgt. Ronnie Blodgett also responded, along with the Madison Fire Department and Redington-Fairview General Hospital emergency medical services.
