Millions of people visit Acadia National Park every year, but to Rachel Crater, nearby Bar Harbor still feels small in the best way.

“It’s that sense of knowing your neighbor and asking somebody to bring your son home from baseball because you’re in a meeting and being able to return the favor,” Crater said. “It’s very much a community culture.”

She and her family will mark five years in Bar Harbor this summer. Crater, 39, works in marketing for a hotel group and is also a consultant for small businesses in the hospitality industry, and she serves on the board of the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce.

Outside of her busy work life, she answered five questions about her personal favorites. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Where do you like to eat?

Sometimes where I want to go depends on, am I going out for a cocktail with my husband, or am I going out to dinner with the whole family? But Side Street Cafe is our go-to. It’s always fun. It’s always good. The staff are super friendly. It’s super upbeat.

One of the most fun things that I almost always order is a “Margarita of the Moment.” It’s a margarita on tap, and the flavor changes every month. And then we always get Cadillac fries, which are the most delicious combination of all sorts of sauces and bacon bits on top of fries with queso. Our whole family loves them.

Where do you go for a drink?

My most favorite is Choco-Latté Cafe, and I get the Choco-Latté, which is their own unique combination of spices that go into a latte. It’s ginger and cardamom and all sorts of deliciousness that just make it extra delicious.

Where do you go to connect with nature?

I’m trying to give you one answer, because we are on the edge of Acadia National Park. But my favorite would be to go paddle boarding in Hulls Cove. When you’re driving into Bar Harbor, and you’ve crossed the island, and you’re coming close to town, it’s the first place you can see the ocean, wide open. There’s a beach there that people can pick up rocks and shells, and it’s super shallow. So when the tide goes out, there’s tons of beach.

Where do you shop local?

Sherman’s is my favorite. I could read a book at any time, and they have such a great collection. I particularly love their staff picks bookshelves because you walk in and you don’t even have to think about, “How do I choose from all these books?” Most recently, I read “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer, and that was a staff pick.

What is a hidden gem in town?

I don’t know how hidden this is in the middle of the summer, just because so many people are downtown. But every time I’ve ever gone, it seems like a hidden gem. William’s on the Green is a new martini bar right off the Village Green, and it’s this dark, cozy atmosphere. You step in the door, and you immediately feel like you’re not in downtown Bar Harbor anymore. You’re in this easy, quiet space.
