WATERVILLE — The Ticonic Bridge over the Kennebec River at the Waterville-Winslow town line will close to pedestrians and vehicles for over a month beginning in late May.

The bridge, which is currently closed to westbound traffic, will close again May 26 at midnight, and is expected to reopen to eastbound and westbound traffic June 29 at 6 a.m.

Daily single lane closures and nightly full closures may be required throughout the summer and fall, according to the city of Waterville, to complete construction of the new bridge.

The closure will follow Thursday’s closure, which will begin at 7 p.m. The bridge will reopen at 6 a.m. Friday.

Alternate routes for vehicles include the Carter Memorial Bridge, which is south of the Ticonic Bridge, and for pedestrians, the Two Cent Bridge,  just north of the Ticonic Bridge.

The closures are part of an ongoing multiyear construction project to replace the Ticonic Bridge, portions of which are over 100 years old. The $52.8M project began in early 2023.

The new bridge will carry five lanes of traffic similar to the existing bridge, feature widened shoulders for bicyclists and sidewalks on both sides of the bridge, according to the city of Waterville.

The project is expected to complete in May 2027.
