Chicken Little is making himself heard again through the same-sex marriage debate.

Various churches would have us believe that the sky will fall if gays and lesbians are allowed to marry. Will God punish us all for this assumed transgression?

God didn’t seem to mind when the various churches championed slavery, because, after all, it is said in the Bible that slaves should cheerfully obey their masters.

And what about poor Galileo, living out his life in house arrest after he had the temerity to look at Jupiter with his telescope and observe that Jupiter had objects that revolved around it.

My point is that times change and our churches lag way behind the curve.

We can find a Bible verse to bolster any view we want to have. The only one I believe bears mentioning here is Jesus’ commandment to “love thy neighbor as thyself.”

Nothing will change in the great state of Maine if gays and lesbians are allowed to marry, other than what is their right as loving couples to give dignity to their relationship for all to see.

Isn’t that what marriage is really all about?
