PITTSFIELD — A fast-moving thunderstorm Saturday knocked down trees and wires, causing damage to vehicles all over town.
Police Officer Steve Armiger said Sunday that the late afternoon storm, which included high wind, knocked out power to many homes.
“As of midnight, people were still without power,” Armiger said. “It was pretty much one storm and it didn’t last very long.” Downed tree reports started coming in around 3:30 and continued throughout the late afternoon. By the time Armiger’s shift started at 8 p.m., the area had been cleaned up, he said.
“It was spread out,” he said. “Trees were down on Route 2, trees were down on Route 100 and on Hunnewell Avenue, right in town.”
No one was hurt, he said.
According to dispatch logs from Somerset County, trees were reported down on Main Street in neighboring Palmyra at 3:35 p.m. From then on, callers reported trees down on Peltoma Avenue and Lancey Street in Pittsfield; wires down on Main Street; and trees down on Crawford Road and again on Peltoma Avenue. Trees also were reported down at 7:04 p.m. on Highland Avenue in nearby Hartland.
