Northern Light Health on Tuesday announced that it is closing its Waterville walk-in clinic at the end of the year, about six months after the health system shuttered Inland Hospital.

Hospital officials, when discussing this spring whether the walk-in clinic would remain open, did not indicate it would close this year.

In a news release Tuesday, Northern Light Health said the clinic had served its purpose as a “bridge” for patients transitioning to other health care providers.

“Patient volumes at the Waterville walk-in care clinic have steadily declined as individuals and families have established ongoing relationships with other providers in the community,” according to the release.

The walk-in clinic is currently open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week, for illnesses and injuries that are not urgent, such as fevers, infections and minor cuts, and for vaccinations.

Northern Light employees at the clinic will be offered severance packages and opportunities to continue working within the health system, according to the release.

The hospital system has struggled financially during the past few years. In addition to shuttering Inland Hospital in Waterville in June, Northern Light closed the walk-in clinic at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and cut 3% of its workforce through attrition and layoffs.
