A boater in Portland Harbor was charged with operating under the influence Wednesday night after U.S. Coast Guard officials saw him operating at high speeds and without proper lighting.
Coast Guard officials did not release the man’s name but said when they stopped the boat and boarded it, they noticed a strong smell of alcohol.
They then escorted the 21-foot vessel to a pier at Portland Yacht Services where Portland police conducted field sobriety tests and determined the driver was impaired.
A passenger in the boat, who also was not identified, was determined to be sober and agreed to sail the boat back to its intended destination of Long Island, New York.
