A fire caused by a generator damaged a Clinton home Friday and displaced a family of four, the town’s fire chief said.
Firefighters responded to 1075 Hill Road shortly after 11 a.m., Chief Rick Barton of the Clinton Fire Department said Friday. The double-wide mobile home is just over the Canaan town line.
The fire started when a homeowner was refilling a generator outside the home and the fuel ignited, Barton said. The generator was either hot or running at the time, he said.
The home suffered extensive interior damage, mostly in the ceiling and attic, Barton said. He was unsure if it would be a total loss or salvageable. A garage was damaged, too.

The family — a husband, wife and two children — were staying with family after the blaze, the chief said. The Red Cross was notified to assist with other needs, such as clothing.
No injuries to the home’s occupants or firefighters were reported.
Clinton property tax records shows the property, which consists of a home on a little more than five acres, belongs to Walter Wood of Fairfield.

The fire response struck a second alarm and mutual aid came from the Burnham, Canaan, Fairfield-Benton, Skowhegan and Winslow fire departments, Barton said. Albion firefighters covered Clinton’s station while crews were on scene.
The Clinton Police Department and the Office of State Fire Marshal also assisted.
