Maine averaged 27 new coronavirus cases daily for the week ending Tuesday, down from 37 cases per day during the previous week.

The relatively small increase in cases comes after 3 weeks of much higher numbers of new infections, and a holiday weekend in which 4 older Mainers died of COVID-19 in Cumberland County.

Maine continues to add several dozen coronavirus cases a day as the number of out-of-state visitors increases.

As a holiday weekend ushers in higher numbers of out-of-state visitors, the average number of active COVID-19 cases per day has crept up, but hospitalizations remain low and the rate of positive tests is declining.

The agency also reported one additional death on Monday, a woman in her 60s from Kennebec County, as well as 28 new coronavirus cases.

State officials had said the July 1 date for resuming indoor service could be delayed, citing higher coronavirus transmission risks and outbreaks linked to bar reopenings in other states.

It marks the lowest daily increase since April 27, and is only the third single-digit increase since mid-March.
