Tens of thousands traveled for winter holiday in Maine

Despite bad winter weather and an unrelenting pandemic, thousands of drivers were on the Maine Turnpike last weekend.

The warming weather and eased business restrictions correspond with a 53% increase in traffic through the York toll plaza from May 1 to May 31.

Maine State Police say both drivers were from out of state, and one was charged with drunken driving.

Traffic is down about 50%, allowing crews to close off more lanes and do more work during daylight hours.

The average price in Maine was $1.93 a gallon for regular gasoline Monday, a price not seen since early 2016.

Daily vehicle traffic on the turnpike dropped precipitously last week as employees worked from home and businesses closed.

Michael Cortwright, 58, was taken to the hospital by Life Flight after sustaining neck injuries from a rollover accident on Sunday morning.
