After more than three hours, the U.S. Coast Guard called off its search in Saco Bay for a potential missing person, pending new evidence.

The search began around 11:30 a.m. today after a report about an empty kayak-type craft and life jacket floating near Wood Island.

But the Coast Guard said it appeared the life jacket hadn’t been worn and wasn’t related to the watercraft, and there were no signs of a distress to indicate a missing person, said Chief Petty Officer Rob Childress of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England.

The search was called off at 2:45 p.m.

The search covered an area of 63 nautical miles. The Biddeford Police Department, a Coast Guard helicopter and a U.S. Coast Guard Falcon airplane participated. Anyone with information relating to these items is asked to call the Coast Guard Sector Northern New England at 767-0302.
