WEST POINT, N.Y. — Cadet Matthew Gilbert of Oakland, recently graduated from the U.S. Military Academy. Gilbert graduated from Messalonskee High School in 2003. He then enlisted in the infantry and served in a reconnaissance platoon out of Ft. Richardson, Alaska. From there he served a tour overseas in which he received a purple heart and medal of valor.

He concentrated his studies in human geography with a focus on European and American cultural studies. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the Infantry Branch and will report to Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii, for his first assignment.

Gilbert is the son of Daniel and Monique Gilbert of Oakland and Jeff and Michelle Young of Monmouth.
