WATERVILLE — City councilors on Tuesday are expected to take final votes on whether to accept $485,000 in donations for the Quarry Road Recreation Area.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at The Center downtown.

Councilors on Oct. 5 voted 7-0 to provide $100,000 for construction of a new 5-kilometer trail at Quarry Road Recreation Area, with a written promise by Colby College to repay that money to the city over a three-year period. Two more votes must be taken on the proposal, and councilors may take one or two votes of those votes on Tuesday.

The new trail would be a competition-level cross country ski trail. The existing trail at Quarry Road also is about 5 kilometers long, which is equal to about 3.1 miles.

The council also will consider accepting $385,000 from Harold Alfond Foundation to buy snow-making equipment for the recreation area. Councilors have already voted 6-1 to accept the money.

Councilor John O’Donnell, D-Ward 5, was the lone dissenter. He opposed the measure, saying he is concerned the city may not be able to meet the conditions of the Alfond gift.

Councilors are required to take two more votes on the proposal.

In other matters, the council will consider awarding a $30,745 contract with Proseal LLC, of Oakland, to fix cracks on the runway at Robert LaFleur Municipal Airport.

The council also will consider renewing public safety dispatching contracts with the towns of Albion, Belgrade, China, Clinton, Rome and Sidney.
