FARMINGDALE — Hall-Dale Schools will keep two full-time foreign-language teachers and half of a school nurse position that was cut from the Regional School Unit 2 budget.
Voters unanimously agreed at Saturday’s Town Meeting to spend $51,723 to pay for Farmingdale’s portion of the cost of two teachers for kindergarten through grade six and the school nurse.
The Hallowell City Council already has approved a tax increase to prevent the cuts. Hallowell’s portion of the cost is $73,834.
The school board of Regional School Unit 2 — which includes Farmingdale and Hallowell, as well as Dresden, Monmouth and Richmond — approved a budget with about $900,000 in cuts, including the salary for two foreign-language teachers and a half-time nursing position for Hall-Dale schools.
Based on property valuations, Farmingdale would pay 46 percent of the cost of the foreign-language teachers and the nurse, and Hallowell would pay 54 percent. There also is a grant and potential donor in the mix, which would bring in more than $50,000.
Hall-Dale is the only elementary school in the district offering foreign languages. Students take a trimester each of Spanish, French and Japanese every year until fifth grade, when they choose one language to study.
Residents approved spending $520,918 to conduct town business. The total budget is $1,113,739, which will be reduced by surplus funds of $565,689 and a highway block grant of $27,132. Following are some of the large expenditures and ordinance changes voters approved:
* $256,618 on highway maintenance;
* $148,200 on a sanding, snowplowing, snow removal and salt contract;
* $500,000 on the Northern Avenue Drainage Improvement project;
* enacting a new Board of Appeals Ordinance;
* enacting a Property Assessed Clean Energy ordinance so residents can have access to energy improvement loans through Efficiency Maine;
* amending the Code of Ordinances, Article VI, Buildings Lots, Section 4-601(E) so property owners can grant an easement to back lots and still conform to frontage requirements for the front lot.
