Augusta cop calls it quits after 25 years

AUGUSTA — A woman’s terrible day had culminated in a thud in the road, a dead beaver and worries over a damaged car. Augusta Police Officer Lindell Cox had checked on the beaver, or at least the mangled remains, when he was confronted by the distraught driver.

Hein pleads not guilty

AUGUSTA — Less than a week before voters go to the polls, House of Representatives Republican primary candidate Michael Hein pleaded not guilty in Augusta District Court on Wednesday to an attempted theft by deception charge.

Augusta elementary school students receive scholarships

AUGUSTA — cPort Credit Union recently held its College Aspirations Scholarship Program for students in all of Augusta’s elementary schools. The program awarded $100 college scholarships to five fifth and sixth grade students from Lincoln, Hussey, Gilbert and Farrington elementary schools based on essays that students wrote about their future aspirations and how higher education will help them reach their goals.

‘Monsieur Lazhar’

On a cold and snowy school day in Montreal, a small sixth-grade boy, Simon, (Emillen Neron) rushes down the hall to his classroom to deliver a tray of milk to Martine, his favorite teacher. He finds the door locked and peers through the glass to see her hanging from a ceiling pipe. He is pushed back against the wall by the shock of it. As he rushes through the halls to find an adult, a girl, Alice, (Sophie Nelisse) stumbles upon the same scene. The other children coming in from recess are quickly herded back out.
