BELGRADE — Rebel, the AWOL yellow Lab, was reunited with his owner Sunday morning after spending 10 nights on the loose in the great outdoors.

Owner Priscilla Ormsby, 70, of Jay got phone calls all day Saturday from people who had seen the dog in the Belgrade-Sidney area but were unable to capture him.

Rebel bolted from Ormsby Oct. 18 while she was visiting in the Sidney area.

Ormsby spent Saturday night at the home of Dominic and Suzanne Patenaude and got a call early Sunday saying the animal had been sighted near Hammond Lumber Company’s Belgrade yard.

She drove down and saw her dog swimming across Belgrade Stream.

“He changed direction when he saw the car and when she called his name started swimming as hard as he could right to her,” Dominic Patenaude said on Monday. He credited the successful reunion to the constant stream of phone calls from people who had read about Ormsby’s dedicated search — and overnight vigils in a field — in Saturday’s newspaper.

“Had it not been for the article, I don’t think she would have gotten her dog,” Patenaude said.
