Skowhegan man hospitalized after three-car accident Monday

SKOWHEGAN — A Skowhegan man is in the hospital after a Monday morning three-car accident on U.S. Route 2.

Albert Barter, 22, of Skowhegan, was driving east in 2012 Dodge shortly before 6:30 a.m. Monday when he hit two trucks that were stopped ahead of him, according to police. Barter hit a 2008 Ford pickup that was stopped behind a commercial vehicle that was waiting to turn left into the Can Do Redemption Center.

Barter’s car skidded between the guardrail and the pickup truck and struck the back of the commercial truck, according to Dan Summers, interim police chief.

Barter’s car was totaled and he was taken to Redington-Fairview Hospital and then to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for what Summers said were non-life-threatening injuries. A charge nurse at EMMC said he was in fair condition Monday afternoon.

The driver of the Ford truck, Jared Grant, 27, of Waterville and the driver of the commercial truck, Steven Harrison, 39, of Waterville, were not injured. Their trucks sustained minor damage, Summers said.

He said speed and the wet weather Monday morning were factors in the accident and there may have been a problem with the car Barter was driving that caused the brakes to not work.
