Madison’s Blomerth gets MPA honor

MADISON — Hannah Blomerth, of Madison, a Madison Area Memorial High School senior, has been selected to receive the 2013 Principals’ Award. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.

Area students hit high note at Jazz Festival

HOULTON — Regional School Unit 29 Music Department and Houlton Music Boosters recently held the 2013 Maine State High School Instrumental Jazz Festival at Houlton High School. Sixty-two ensembles, made up of 781 musicians competed for 80 individual and group awards. Ten different adjudicators were involved in the process of evaluating high school jazz combos and jazz bands.

Underhill earns Accredited Airport Executive

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Emily Underhill, division director of development for the Lee County Port Authority, has earned the honor of Accredited Airport Executive by the American Association of Airport Executives. To achieve accreditation, Underhill passed a 180-item written examination, prepared a management research paper and demonstrated her knowledge of all aspects of airport management, business administration, environmental regulations, air service, safety and security, operations and general transportation economics during an oral interview before a panel of AAE examiners. Fewer than 10 percent of the 5,100 AAAE members throughout the country have passed.

SOMERSET CAREER AND TECHNICAL CENTER AWARDS

SKOWHEGAN — Somerset Career and Technical Center Program Leaders Assemblies were held recently. Students from Carrabec High School, Madison Area Memorial High School, Maine Central Institute, MSAD 53, Skowhegan Area High School and Upper Kennebec Valley High School attend SCTC. Director David Dorr introduced the program instructors who then presented the awards to their students.

McCarthy graduates from Army school

FORT LEONARD WOOD Mo. — Sgt. Ryan C. McCarthy recently graduated from the U.S. Army Sapper Leader School at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. This rigorous and competitive 28-day school trains soldiers on advanced combat engineer techniques such as demolitions, mountaineering, patrolling and waterborne combat operations. Graduates are awarded the prestigious Sapper Tab upon successful completion of the program.

Community Craft Circle in Winslow

WINSLOW — A craft program will meet for the first time from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Winslow Public Library. The free Community Craft Circle will offer lessons and projects in basic knitting, needlepoint, embroidery and more.
