MCI’s Fowler honored with Maine Principals’ Association Award

PITTSFIELD — Courtney Fowler, of Pittsfield, a Maine Central Institute senior, has been selected to receive the 2013 Principals’ Award, Headmaster Christopher Hopkins has announced. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and school citizenship, according to a press release.

Apple tree pruning field day planned

SKOWHEGAN — Master Gardener Alumni, Mark Sheriff and family in collaboration with UMaine Cooperative Extension, will host an apple tree pruning and grafting field day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 6, at Avalon Acres, 234 Dexter Road. Homeowners who are growing apple trees or plan to plant apple trees this spring are encouraged to attend. The day will start with information about general planting and management practices and then move to the orchard for demonstrations.

Mid-Maine Technical student awarded at Skills championship

WATERVILLE — Thirty six Mid-Maine Technical Center students recently competed in 24 competitions at the SkillsUSA Championships. The competitions were hosted by Eastern Maine Community College and United Technology Center in Bangor. More than 600 students representing 23 career and technical schools throughout the state participated. The championship is sponsored annually by the Maine Chapter of SkillsUSA. The Gold Medal winner will represent Maine in the National SkillsUSA Championships, set for June 24-28, in Kansas City, Mo.

UMF climate forum to feature journalist Colin Woodard Climate Change Forum

FARMINGTON — University of Maine at Farmington will feature award-winning, internationally acclaimed investigative journalist Colin Woodard as the next speaker in its revealing University forum on climate change, according to a press release. His talk, “The Great Meltdown: Tales from the Front Lines of Climate Change,” will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Lincoln Auditorium, in Roberts Learning Center. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Pittsfield theater to close for a week

PITTSFIELD — The Pittsfield Community Theatre will convert from 35mm film to digital. In order to complete the digital conversion and renovations, the theater will be closed Friday, March 29, through Thursday, April 4, and re-open Friday, April 5, with its first digital movie.
