Maine Principals’ Association Award Fontaine earns MPA honor
BELGRADE — Sabine Fontaine, of Belgrade, a Messalonskee High School senior, has been selected to receive the 2013 Principals’ Award. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship, according to a press release.

Nonprofits accept $7,000 in grants from central Maine JMG students7 organizations receive grants from area youth
UNITY — Working collaboratively, 200 middle and high school students from Messalonskee, Winslow and Waterville awarded $7,000 in grants to Maine nonprofits through the statewide youth philanthropy program, Jumpstart Our Youth, according to a press release. Jobs for Maine’s Graduates students invited several nonprofits to apply for the annual grant funding through an RFP process, hosted presentations to hear more about the missions of the agencies, how the grants would be used and ultimately voted to select the seven nonprofits to each receive a $1,000 grant.
Magic workshop in Pittsfield April 17
PITTSFIELD — Professional magician and entertainer Conjuring Carroll Chapman will present a magic workshop at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, at Pittsfield Public Library. This workshop is geared for both children and adults interested in the art of sleight of hand and misdirection.
St. John School students win contest
WINSLOW — St. John Regional Catholic School recently announced that four of Maine’s state grade level winners in the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Contest are St. John students. They are Jairus Hurdle, second grade; Alaina Karen Lambert, third grade; Julia Bard, fourth grade; and Emilee Theriault, fifth grade.
Gardiner tackles pros, cons of keeping livestock
I attended the recent public hearing in Gardiner regarding the keeping of small livestock, specifically goats and sheep, in high-density residential zones. The hearing brought out strong and articulate opinions and concerns on both sides. The discussion was tabled was almost two hours later.
Owners should clean up after dogs at dog park
I recently took my boxer to the Augusta dog park. She loves going there, and I love to watch her have fun.
