Murdered Falmouth mother was trying to have her son committed at time of death
Shirley Leighton, of Falmouth, was walking to the telephone Friday, intending to call a psychiatric facility in Westbrook to have her son Andrew committed, when he shot her in the back of the head with a gun he had bought the day before, according to a Maine State Police affidavit.
Bill to strengthen Clean Election Act sails through legislative hearing
No one at a legislative hearing Monday opposed a bill that would strengthen the Maine Clean Election Act, which was weakened last year.

State fire marshal reports cause of downtown Waterville fire unknown
The cause of a downtown Waterville fire that destroyed one building and damaged two others on Friday is undetermined, investigators said Monday. Sgt. Tim York, of the State Fire Marshal’s Office, confirmed that the fire did originate from a third-floor deck, could not definitively say what caused it.
County jails face $700,000 shortfall in state funding; meeting with corrections board Tuesday
County jail officials statewide are facing a $700,000 shortfall in funding from the state’s Board of Corrections. The board plans to meet Tuesday with county officials to divide $1.5 million in state dollars among the jails in order to fund their fourth-quarter payments partially.
