Encourage mom to visit all the kids
Dear Annie: My mother-in-law and her husband moved in with us 10 years ago. They even built an addition onto our house, from which we will gain financially if we ever sell it. During this time, I’ve enjoyed Mom’s help with our two kids and the freedom it gives my husband and me. We enjoy child-free vacations every year and go out to dinner without the kids four times a week. My mother-in-law takes care of all the childcare in our home. My husband and I rarely do any parenting except to enjoy our time with the kids and bask in all the extra achievements they have gained as a result of having four loving parents.
CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: Obama’s war on coal bad for US; won’t stop rest of world
The economy stagnates. Syria burns. Scandals lap at his feet. China and Russia mock him, even as a “29-year-old hacker” revealed his nation’s spy secrets to the world. How does President Barack Obama respond? With a grandiloquent speech about climate change.
VIEW FROM AWAY: Mandela rates title of ‘world hero’
President Barack Obama called Nelson Mandela a “world hero.” Mandela has exhibited that rarest of qualities for national leaders: Grace.

Let’s remind ourselves what education is for. American education’s long-term purposes focus on citizenship, transmitting culture and learning to the next generation, and enabling individuals to meet their human potential.
OUR OPINION: Newsflash: Parties don’t need to fight if they agree
We can understand if Republicans and Democrats fight when they disagree. But it makes no sense at all when they are on the same side and fight anyway.
Representatives disrespect one of their peers
I was watching WLBZ news on television recently and saw Rep. Dennis Keschl, R-Belgrade, speaking at a legislative meeting about Maine’s budget veto. During that piece, I saw something that was wrong and insulting.
Position of governor disgraced once again
Gov. Paul LePage has once again disgraced the distinguished position of governor in his recent vulgar comments to Sen. Troy Jackson, of Allagash.
Something ‘disturbing’ in LePage’s personality
Writing letters to the editor about our governor seems to be a lesson in futility. After all, he won’t talk to MaineToday Media, so I assume he doesn’t read the Morning Sentinel or Kennebec Journal, but here goes anyway.
