VIENNA — The Vienna Historical Society will present plays which portray the foibles and eccentricities of small-town life. The performances will take place Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. in Vienna Union Hall, and at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, July 27.Admission cost $6. Refreshments will be provided by Mill Stream Grange.

Annual Hall of Fame, Distinguished Achievement Ceremony set for MCI
PITTSFIELD — Maine Central Institute will hold its annual Hall of Fame and Distinguished Achievement Award induction ceremony during Reunion Weekend, according to an MCI press release. The ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, in MCI’s Trustee Memorial Student Center. Hall of Fame honorees this year are MCI alumni/ae Tania Carnrick, of Winslow, Ryan Fendler, of Camden, and Catherine “Kaye” Mooers, of Oakland. The Distinguished Achievement Award recipient is MCI alumnus Donn Fendler, of Newport and Clarksville, Tenn.
M.D. HARMON: Military recruiters should be treated honorably at schools
We’ve recently seen a “he-said, she-said” contretemps between Gov. Paul LePage and a number of politicians and school officials about how military recruiters were treated at some Maine high schools when they tried to present service opportunities to students.

Jury system’s life expectancy drops with verdict
I’m 82. When grocery shopping with tongue in cheek, I humorously wonder if I’m going to outlive the orange juice dated good for three months or the AA batteries claimed effective for 10 years. Lately, I get a similar but serious sense about the life expectancy of our country’s jury system, when public gangsterism breaks out following jury trial verdicts in high-profile criminal cases.
