PITTSFIELD — MCI sophomore Julia Bluhm, of Waterville, will be Maine Central Institute’s first student Patterson Lecture Series speaker. Bluhm will speak at 2:15 p.m. Monday at the school, in Parks Gymnasium. The talk will correspond with this year’s school theme of Communication.
Bluhm is a blogger for the SPARK Movement, which campaigns against sexualized images of women and girls in the media. As part of SPARK, she successfully completed a Change.org petition which resulted in Seventeen magazine committing to print one unaltered photo spread per month. Because of her work, Bluhm was one of three nominees for the 2013 Ms. Foundation People’s Choice Award. In addition, she was one of the student keynote speakers for the May 2013 Maine Learning Technology Initiative Student Conference.
On top of her work with the SPARK Movement, Bluhm is on the advisory board for Hardy Girls, Healthy Women. An honors student and nine-year member of Bossov Ballet Theatre at Maine Central Institute, she is training to become a professional ballet dancer.
