Richmond police urge public to be wary

Richmond Police urge the public to be wary about claims of authority by others after a young man lied to them about being with the military police in a bid to discuss a case.

Police Chief Scott MacMaster said the 19-year-old went to the police station Wednesday evening after witnessing Richmond officers issue a summons charging a juvenile with a tobacco-related offense. The man claimed to serve as a police officer with the Maine Army National Guard and demanded information on the interaction between the police officer and juvenile. Richmond officers wouldn’t discuss the case with him and invited him to call MacMaster, which he has not done.

MacMaster said the man is attached to a National Guard unit, but as a mechanic, not a police officer.

Richmond police are looking into potential charges, but in the meantime, MacMaster said while it’s not illegal to lie about a career or position unless that lie is told to exert authority over another person, people should still be cautious about believing such claims. MacMaster said there is no evidence the man has employed the tactic with the general public, but the fact he made the claim to police makes MacMaster wonder if he might.

“What’s the mindset behind these actions?” MacMaster saod.

MacMaster said anyone who encounters the young man and feels uneasy about his claims should call Richmond Police at 737-8518.
